EeePC

I’ve got a new toy. An Asus EeePC, a tiny subnotebook, under two pounds, tiny little 7″ screen, 512MB RAM (I’ll soon void my warranty and upgrade to a Gig), 4GB internal SSD (no harddrive). Very sturdy, very tiny. Loads of fun.

I am, of course, writing this post from it - connected to the wireless at home; openvpn, ssh, IMAP email, all straight forward.

It’s running Xandros Linux, buy I may end up changing that to something I’m more familiar with - I don’t really need the games and learning software, nor do I need the ultra easy to use mode - or the unionfs that makes sure you never “damage” the underlying Linux installation…

The plan is for this to become my second laptop that always travels with me - the personal system running Linux on which I can hack and play without having to worry about breaking a system I need for work. And without being stuck in a VM.

So far I love it. Yes, the screen is tiny an the keyboard is too small as well. But hey, that’s the point! And it has an SSD. That alone makes it worth playing with it.

Thanks for visiting!
I hope this was helpful - if not, please leave a comment and let me know why! Were you searching for something else? Did I miss an important aspect?

Sel Gris

While I was gone K2 heard about a new restaurant in town, Sel Gris. So she made arrangements to have our very good friend Denise come over and watch the kids and made reservations for us to go explore.

All I can say is YUMMY! We sat at the bar, overlooking the open kitchen and saw Chef Daniel Mondok work right in front of us. To quote “everything is better with butter”. And he’s right - the food was amazing. I had sweetbreads with an egg yolk in cake batter as starter, K2 had foie gras. Simply wonderful. After that I had three different preparations of beets and K2 had a delicious endive salad. And as main dishes we had duck breast with mushrooms and rice and salmon on risotto with shrimp (gee - that sounds so mundane - I didn’t steal a menu so I can’t reproduce the correct description of the food). Triple chocolate mousse and an assortment of sorbets closed the dinner.

I’m not a food writer, I can’t do the food justice with words. You’ll have to come and eat (and see) for yourself. It was truly fantastic. And we already made reservations for a second visit - there’s too much left to explore on the menu (with a clear view of the kitchen we got to see many delicious looking dishes - very very tempting).

I love my life!

Impressive sign of innovation at SCO

Given the mess that SCO is in (due to their own doing) and the mess they have created for the Linux community, I keep lose tabs on what they are doing. So I was thrilled to see another sign of the speed of innovation over there. The top news item on their home page doesn’t talk about their failed lawsuits or their Chapter 11 filing - no, it’s about a FREE (their caps, not mine) update to SCO Unix that fixes the daylight savings time issue. Great thinking and innovating, guys. One minor nit: that happened LAST year (my caps, not theirs).

Playing with AJAX

I’ve been playing with a cool Wordpress plugin. AJAX’d Wordpress allows you to add a number of features to your site - what I really like was the ability to do in-line comments and commenting.

Pretty slick…
